Stories from Lake Como
Menaggio: elegance and history on the western shore
Menaggio is strategically located on the western shore, at the entrance to the valley connecting Lake Como to Lake Lugano.
From Via Regina to tourism
The town developed along the ancient Via Regina and near the road to Val Menaggio. Traces of the medieval castle, destroyed in 1523 by the Grisons, remain in the upper district.
In the nineteenth century, grand hotels and villas transformed Menaggio into a holiday resort. Villa Mylius Vigoni is now an important Italian-German cultural center; the Golf Club Menaggio e Cadenabbia was founded in 1907.
A walk between water and alleys
Piazza Garibaldi opens directly onto the lake. From here, the lakeside promenade leads through gardens and views towards Bellagio and the Grigne, while the internal streets climb towards churches and remnants of the walls.
Mary Shelley recalled the beauty of Menaggio by moonlight in her writings, a description that still retains its power today.
